Have you seen it? The story of Louie Zamperini called "Unbroken"?
In this story, brilliantly and painfully told by Angie Jolie-Pitt, an unbreakable man, Louis Zamperini is basically tested through the second world war...mostly by this man above. Played by the Japanese Brad Pitt, Miyavi, portrays real life concentration camp leader, Matsurio Watanabe whom is the Japanese male version of Laurie LaTerror.
Before I tell all of you how much this story meant to me when I watched it last evening, I want you all to know that I have a better understanding of what it means to be a man...a patriot...a family member....and a citizen of this country. There is a point in the film where I wonder if I am half the man that Louie Zamperini was. I know what I've been put through has been just as horrible, just as painful and just as life threatening...of that, I am positive.
I've faced my "Watanabe" and still do...only she is inside of my head...which is where Louis was able to go where I can't. I can't find that internal peace and resolution without Laurie knowing about it and taking that from me. I've had to move the battle from inside my brain to inside of hers...and that's where our stories differ.
Louis did the same thing with "The Bird" as they call Matsurio Watanabe...whom could never bring himself to meet with Mr. Zamperini after the war. I think it is because Louis defeated his captor on a human level that only few of us can understand.
I have some doubts about what I would have done in Mr. Zamperini's situation, but the facts show that I am no different in spirit. I can't run from this situation or take the easy way out by selling out my own friends and country...I can't go the way of Ed Snowden...though I understand him better now too.
Before I go any further into what this movie did for me...and what it did to me...I want to tell Angie that I am so happy that someone didn't sugar coat what it is like to be a prisoner in real life and in your own mind. It's hard. It's painful...and people need to know that. You did great my angel!!!
Angie and Miyavi...great story tellers...wonderful and haunting job |
To Miyavi...a role well played...there is a woman in Southern California that thinks she's playing a role just like that...but the reality is that she is a modern day Watanabe...and she needs to be defeated by someone else that remains....
Unbroken,
Kevin (and Christopher)
